Basically, when the water is being sucked upwards toward the impeller, the pressure is quite low at this point. If, during this, the pressure of liquid somehow falls below NPSH, cavitation would begin.
Cavitation is simply the process of a liquid boiling up and forming bubbles within the pump. These bubbles can damage the insides of the pump. And so, you should make sure that the pump you are getting has an NPSH that can help in transferring the liquid you want to transfer.
That is, you might want to transfer liquids other than water. Such liquids may start boiling up at a certain amount of pressure. So you should make sure that you get a pump that allows for an NPSH that can prevent this from happening.
Horsepower and Efficiency
Horsepower is simply the power required to transfer water at 100% efficiency. Efficiency is simply the percentage value of energy going into the pump relative to the energy coming out of the pump.
That is, we give electrical energy to move the pump. This energy is finally transferred to potential energy at the impellers, which causes the water to gush out.
So if we say that the pump is operating at 100% efficiency, then we mean that all the electrical energy has been transformed to potential energy to discharge the water.
However, this is not the case. Some energy is lost within the motor to overcome factors like friction. So generally, water pumps do not operate at 100% efficiency.
Now, horsepower is basically the amount of power that the pump needs to transfer water from one point to another.
The interesting part is that the amount of horsepower that a pump needs depends on the flow rate and head of the pump. Usually, the higher the flow rate, the more horsepower that is required.
